Where do I start on my diet?
Understanding the impotance of Fat & Carbohydrate

This is an easy one. When you consume high fat foods your body will store this fat on your body...easy as that.

There are a number of other things to say about this though. It's not just fat that makes you fat! Carbohydrates make you fat too! And on a much bigger level.

As we have already said, Carbohydrates include starch and sugar. These are used for energy in the body. If you eat too much of both these things, your body stores them. And can you guess what it stores them as?...Yes, Fat.

Carbohydrates, or carbs for short, are a big factor in weight loss and you will see that a lot of the popular diets revolve around them. Carbs are designed for quick energy and this is the main problem for most overweight people. Basically if you don't use the energy they give you, then it is stored as fat. The problems are more complicated than that though - missing meals, snacking or eating large meals starts a big cycle of disaster.

We will start with missing meals. When you have not eaten for a while your body needs energy. Evolution has designed us to seek foods that will give us the energy as fast as possible. This is why when you haven't eaten for a while you will start to crave sugary foods like cake, biscuits or even fruits. This is also why you should never go to the supermarket on an empty stomach - because you will end up buying and eating a lot of sugary food.

When you eat carbohydrate, it is broken down in your body to form glucose (blood sugar). Glucose in the blood causes insulin to be released. Insulin has the job of transporting the glucose to your muscles for energy use.

When you have eaten more carbs than you body needs, any glucose that is left over will be transported and stored as fat. Your body is now also instructed not to release any of the stored fat because it has enough glucose in the muscles for energy already!

The problem with an insulin spike from eating lots of carbohydrate is that it takes the sugar out of your blood and this will often make you feel moody and tired and cause you to crave more sugary foods - also known as a sugar crash. This causes you to eat more sugary foods for a quick "pick up", and this starts the cycle again.

Diets high in sugar release more insulin and make you crave more carbohydrate.

THIS CYCLE STOPS YOU EVER BURNING FAT AND MAKES YOU FEEL TIRED ALL THE TIME.

So to recap:

  • Excess carbohydrate will be stored as fat.
  • Your body is instructed not to burn fat.
  • The more sugar in your meal, the more fat that is stored.

Eating fibre along with carbohydrates can reduce the extreme blood sugar reactions and reduce the amount stored as fat.

This may be a surprise, but low-fat diets cause quicker digestion and absorption of carbohydrates leading to weight gain. It is important to include a good amount of fat in your diet. By adding some fats, digestion and absorption is slower, and the insulin reaction is moderated This reduce fat storage.

IMPORTANT: Eating a higher carbohydrate meal causes a more rapid release of insulin and a large amount of fat storage.
